Daruma has helped forgotten places find new purpose, turning them into spaces the community can enjoy again.

Track Record

Daruma has a proven history of turning neglected spaces into thriving community assets. In Hillcrest, we transformed two long-vacant properties into Better Buzz Coffee and Ryoma Ramen, creating a lively hub that attracts people and strengthens the neighborhood. Building on this success, we are advancing Hillcrest Connect, a mixed-use development designed to expand housing, boost the local economy, and shape the future of San Diego.

Better Buzz Coffee

Project Summery

Once a neglected and aging structure, the building that now houses Better Buzz Hillcrest holds over a century of history. Originally part of the Sisters of Mercy Hospital, built in 1919, the site stood as a quiet reminder of San Diego’s past. After decades of decline it was thoughtfully renovated and transformed into the flagship location of the Better Buzz Coffee brand, setting a new standard for its design and community presence.

The new Better Buzz Hillcrest preserves the spirit of its historical roots while embracing a bright, modern, and trend-forward design that reflects the energy and creativity of the Hillcrest community. Today, it stands not only as a thriving local destination but also as a symbol of revitalization and adaptive reuse, showing how thoughtful redevelopment can bring new life to a forgotten landmark.

Ryoma Ramen

Project Summery

Ryoma Ramen, located in the heart of Hillcrest, is a Japanese restaurant where you can enjoy truly authentic flavors from Japan right here in San Diego. On the first floor, we serve our signature ramen made with carefully crafted ingredients, while the second floor offers freshly prepared sushi.

Blending traditional Japanese tastes with a modern, comfortable atmosphere, Ryoma Ramen has become a welcoming gathering place for the community where guests can savor high quality dishes and experience the richness of Japanese food culture.
